It’s high on any homeowner’s list of worst fears – a plumbing emergency. At Rite Tech Plumbing, we’re all too familiar with panicked calls from our Kelowna customers with a serious problem on their hands. While our team of experts is ready, willing and able to help provide necessary emergency repairs, there are a few things you can do to keep things from getting any worse while you wait for our help to arrive.

TURN THE WATER OFF!

This one seems obvious, but people have been known to think a little less than clearly in an emergency. Head to the main shut-off valve for your house and turn off the water at the source. If you don’t know where the main shut-off valve is, there is no time like the present to find out!

If you have reason to believe the leak is appliance related, have a look for an obvious cause. Sometimes it’s not a leaking washing machine causing a problem in the basement, it’s a dryer sheet clogging the drain in the laundry tub!

Identifying Problems & Troubleshooting Tips

If it is bitterly cold out and you have a pipe that runs near the outside of your house, you may be dealing with a frozen or burst pipe. If you suspect a frozen pipe, you can try using a hair dryer, or towels soaked in hot water (if you still have running water).

If you are at all unsure of the location the frozen area, or you hear rushing water that likely comes from a burst pipe, do not attempt a repair. Call us right away!

Clogged Toilets and Drains

No matter if it’s the toilet or the drain that is backed up, a plunger is the only tool anyone other than a licensed plumber should attempt to use to remove the clog. Try at least 15-20 steady, rhythmic up and down motions with the plunger to build up pressure in the pipe. If that doesn’t work, additional plunging efforts are unlikely to be successful. Do not attempt using a drain snake or other tools.

It’s important to know your limits when it comes to plumbing emergencies, because home repairs can do more harm than good. Rite Tech plumbing can be anywhere in the Kelowna area in a flash, and we can handle any plumbing emergency! Call us at (250) 681-0089.
