There are many things we have the best intentions of doing at any time of year, but we just don’t get around to it. Home maintenance and improvement tasks are no exceptions.

As a new year is upon us, take advantage of the quiet times around the holidays to make some changes in habits around the house. We suggest starting with your approach to plumbing maintenance around the house.

2017 New Year’s Resolutions for Your Plumbing System

Stay ahead of plumbing emergencies by making a pledge to keep these New Year’s Resolutions around the house:

  1. Learn how your plumbing systems work. Nobody sets out to cause damage to the plumbing systems in the house deliberately. Often, problems with clogged drains and damaged water spouts come about because we simply did not know any better. This year, take the time to learn how the plumbing systems in your home function. Make sure you know how to turn off the main shut-off valve in the home, how to plunge a clogged toilet drain, and when to call in a professional plumber.
  2. Show your hot water heater some love. Your hot water heater works hard every single day to provide water at the right temperature for your daily life. In fact, most of us don’t give it any thought at all until it stops working. It doesn’t take a lot of work to maintain the hot water heater in your home, and a proactive approach can help you avoid the inconvenience of living without hot water and the expense of an emergency plumbing repair.
  3. Make sure pipes stay warm. One of the most common plumbing problems, particularly in the winter, is burst pipes. You can help avoid this and cut down on the costs of heating your hot water by insulating hot water pipes properly. As an added bonus, as you are insulating pipes, you will have an opportunity to give them a visual inspection for signs of drips, leaks and general wear and tear. It’s a great bonus review that can save you a lot of time, money and trouble down the road!
